An extraordinary historical discovery, revealing previously unheard performances by one of the most revolutionary and influential musicians in the history of jazz.

With The Tiberi Tapes, Impulse ! Records opens a remarkable chapter in the musical legacy of John Coltrane. Recorded privately by fellow saxophonist Frank Tiberi during performances in New York and Philadelphia clubs between 1960 and 1964, these extraordinary tapes remained largely unheard for more than six decades. Their first official release offers a fascinating opportunity to experience Coltrane's restless creativity, extraordinary technical command and relentless pursuit of new musical possibilities.

Throughout this transformative period, John Coltrane was redefining the expressive boundaries of modern jazz. Moving beyond the harmonic innovations of his earlier recordings, he developed an increasingly adventurous musical language characterised by extended improvisations, complex rhythmic structures and an almost spiritual intensity. These intimate club performances capture that artistic evolution in its most spontaneous and revealing form.

The recordings feature Coltrane alongside some of the most celebrated musicians in jazz history, including pianist McCoy Tyner, bassists Steve Davis, Reggie Workman and Jimmy Garrison, drummers Pete La Roca and Elvin Jones, and the remarkable multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. Together, these musicians contributed to the development of one of the most influential ensembles in modern jazz, creating performances of exceptional energy, freedom and emotional depth.

The programme begins with two fascinating interpretations of "Giant Steps", offering a rare opportunity to hear Coltrane exploring his celebrated composition at different tempos. Other remarkable performances include "Impressions", "Satellite", "Good Bait" and the expansive "Resolution", each revealing the extraordinary intensity and creative imagination of his live improvisations. The collection also includes lesser-known material, providing invaluable insight into the musical experiments that shaped his evolving artistic vision.

Recorded by Frank Tiberi using a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder, these performances were never intended as commercial recordings. Their sound is necessarily raw and imperfect, preserving the limitations of the original recording equipment and the challenging acoustics of crowded jazz clubs. Yet it is precisely this unfiltered immediacy that makes the collection so compelling, allowing listeners to experience the atmosphere, risk and excitement of Coltrane's performances with extraordinary intimacy.

The original recordings have been carefully restored and mastered by Kevin Reeves, preserving their historical authenticity while making these remarkable documents accessible to contemporary listeners. Rather than offering the polished sonic presentation of a conventional studio album, The Tiberi Tapes provides something equally valuable: an exceptionally rare opportunity to hear John Coltrane developing his revolutionary musical ideas directly on stage.

Presented in a deluxe Impulse! Records box set containing four 140 g black vinyl LPs, this remarkable edition includes an LP-sized booklet featuring extensive historical essays by Ashley Kahn, Lauren Du Graf, Lewis Porter and Kevin Reeves. The distinctive packaging draws inspiration from Frank Tiberi's original tape boxes, creating a beautifully conceived collector's edition that reflects the archival significance of these recordings.

An essential historical document for admirers of John Coltrane, collectors of rare jazz recordings and anyone fascinated by the extraordinary creative evolution of one of music's greatest innovators.
