A magnificent Blue Note masterpiece combining the irresistible grooves of soul jazz, the sophistication of hard bop and the extraordinary melodic imagination of Hank Mobley.

Recorded in 1965, Dippin' stands among the finest achievements of the legendary tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, one of the most distinctive and consistently rewarding musicians in the history of Blue Note Records. Celebrated for his warm, rounded tone, exceptional melodic fluency and effortlessly swinging improvisations, Mobley developed a deeply personal musical language that made him one of the defining voices of modern jazz.

For this outstanding recording, Mobley assembled a remarkable quintet featuring the brilliant trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Harold Mabern Jr., bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Billy Higgins. Together, these five exceptional musicians create an atmosphere of remarkable cohesion, rhythmic vitality and spontaneous musical invention.

The album opens with "The Dip", an infectious composition driven by a powerful, blues-inflected groove. Mobley's fluid tenor saxophone and Morgan's incisive trumpet playing establish an irresistible dialogue, supported by Mabern's expressive piano accompaniment and the dynamic rhythmic foundation provided by Ridley and Higgins.

"Recado Bossa Nova" introduces a captivating Brazilian influence, demonstrating Mobley's remarkable versatility and his ability to combine lyrical elegance with rhythmic sophistication. His relaxed phrasing and beautifully constructed improvisations reveal the expressive warmth that distinguishes his playing from that of his contemporaries.

On "The Vamp", the quintet explores a compelling minor-key atmosphere, propelled by an insistent rhythmic figure and a succession of inventive solos. The performance perfectly illustrates the extraordinary balance between compositional structure and improvisational freedom that characterises the finest Blue Note recordings of the period.

The beautiful ballad "I See Your Face Before Me" reveals another dimension of Mobley's artistry. His tender, expressive tenor saxophone playing transforms the familiar melody into an intimate and deeply moving musical statement, highlighting his exceptional sensitivity and lyrical imagination.

The album concludes with "Ballin'", a spirited performance that brings the session to an exhilarating conclusion, showcasing the ensemble's effortless swing, impeccable interplay and extraordinary collective energy.

Throughout Dippin', Hank Mobley demonstrates why his recordings remain essential listening for admirers of classic hard bop. Combining sophisticated compositions, memorable melodies and inspired improvisations, the album captures the unmistakable spirit of Blue Note jazz at its creative peak.
